Few wall decor pieces catch the eye like a cluster of hexagon shelves. The honeycomb shape turns a plain wall into a feature, and it stores your plants, photo frames and little keepsakes at the same time. If you are considering hexagon wall shelves for your home in India, this guide covers how to choose them, how to arrange them, how to put them up safely and how to style them so they look designed rather than crowded.
Most Indian apartments have more wall space than floor space. Hexagon shelves use that vertical area without the bulk of a bookcase. Their angled edges also give you a mix of open and semi-enclosed spots, so tall items and small items both have a place.
They also suit a range of interiors. In a traditional home with warm wood furniture, a honeycomb set looks like handcrafted art. In a modern flat with white walls, the same set adds texture and a bit of geometry. Because the shape is symmetrical, it works above a sofa, behind a study table, beside a bed or along a staircase wall.
Solid woods such as sheesham and mango are strong, take weight well and age gracefully, though they cost more. Engineered wood and MDF sets are lighter on the pocket and easier to hang, which makes them a sensible pick for decor-only walls. Whichever you choose, look for a smooth, even finish on the inner edges, since that is where cheap shelves chip first.
A good rule is to cover roughly two thirds of the width of the furniture beneath the cluster. Over a 6-foot sofa, a group about 4 feet wide looks balanced. On a narrow wall, go for a vertical stack of three or four hexagons instead of a wide spread.
Separate hexagons let you design your own pattern but need careful measuring. A pre-joined unit, like our Wooden Pared Hexagon Floating Wall Shelf with 4 Shelves (from Rs. 1,549), comes already aligned, so you only need to hang one piece and the spacing is guaranteed to be right.
Before drilling anything, cut paper templates in the shelf shape and tape them to the wall. Live with the layout for a day. It costs nothing and saves you from patching extra holes.
Check what your wall is made of first. Brick and concrete walls take wall plugs and screws well. Hollow partition walls need heavy-duty anchors. Use a spirit level for the first shelf, then build outward from it, since one crooked hexagon throws off the whole pattern. Keep heavy items such as brass idols or large books to the lower shelves and the ones closest to the wall studs or anchor points. For a full walkthrough, see our guide on how to install floating wall shelves.
In a set of six compartments, fill about two with objects, put one or two things in a third, and leave the rest bare. Empty compartments are what make the filled ones look intentional.
Combine a small potted plant, a framed photograph, a ceramic diya or candle holder, and a stack of two books. Repeat one colour, such as terracotta or brass, across three compartments to tie the display together.
Lean round objects like a small clock or a decorative plate against the angled walls, and use the flat base for taller pieces. Hexagons suit a small number of larger items better than many tiny ones.
A string of warm fairy lights or a small LED strip tucked behind the shelf edge gives a soft glow in the evening. It is particularly pretty during Diwali and other festive weeks.
Dust the shelves weekly with a dry microfibre cloth. For stains, wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry straight away, as standing moisture can mark wood, especially during the monsoon. Keep shelves out of long, direct sun to avoid fading. Solid wood sets benefit from a light coat of furniture wax or natural oil once or twice a year. Our tips on protecting wooden furniture from monsoon damage apply here too.
If hexagons are not quite your style, browse our full range of wooden wall shelves, minimalist floating wall shelves and space-saving corner wall shelves. Each is built to turn a bare wall into something useful and good-looking.
A hexagon shelf set is one of the easiest ways to add personality to a wall. Choose a material that suits what you will display, plan the layout on paper, install it carefully, and leave some breathing space when you style it. Done well, a few hexagons can become the focal point of the room.
